New Tourist Refund Scheme Rules
New rules have kicked in for travellers departing Australia who take advantage of the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS).
For those of you who haven’t heard of the TRS before now, it allows travellers to claim back GST from purchases made in Australia in the 30 days prior to travel (purchases must be over the price of $300 to qualify). So essentially you buy a laptop before you go on holiday, and when you’re at the airport you can claim back the 10% tax you paid.
There’s just one catch: you must have the goods on you when you try to get your cash (which means you have to carry it as hand luggage).
The new rules start tomorrow, and there are benefits:
- Purchases can be now made within 60 days of travel (instead of 30 days currently)
- Goods under $300 can be claimed for the rebate (though the total must be over $300)
Travellers must have supply a tax invoice with ABN details, and for items worth more than $1000 make sure you have your name and address printed on the receipt.
